Which Roll Direction Should My Tickets Go In?

Understanding Roll Direction

When we talk about “roll direction” in LottoShield, we’re referring to the numerical order in which your tickets leave the display case or vending machine.

Roll direction is an important factor in accurately tracking your scratcher tickets—it determines whether your starting and ending ticket numbers should increase or decrease during each audit.

Which Roll Direction Should My Store Use?

Whether you choose to count from low to high (e.g., 000 → 149) or high to low (e.g., 149 → 000) doesn’t matter when using LottoShield.

What does matter is that you stay consistent with your chosen roll direction at all times and across all fixtures in your store. Both your display cases and vending machines must use the same roll direction.

For example:

  • If your display case begins at ticket 0, your vending machine should also start at ticket 0.

  • When performing backstock audits, you’ll scan ticket 0 there as well.

Important: If your store previously followed a policy where rolls were run from low to high, and you tore off ticket 0 (zero) and added it to the back of the pack, this practice must be discontinued.

Continuing to alter the ticket order in this way will cause reconciliation errors in LottoShield. All tickets must remain in their original, unmodified order.

Why Consistency Matters

As long as you maintain one consistent roll direction across your entire operation, LottoShield will track every ticket accurately and your audits will reconcile perfectly—no mismatched counts or calculation errors.

What About Games That Show Two Numbers?

Some lottery tickets show two numbers:

  • The actual ticket number (the number you should use)
  • The opposite number in parentheses (from the opposite end of the pack)

It is very important to:

  • Always use the ACTUAL number (not in parentheses)

  • Never use the number in parentheses — that is the OPPOSITE ticket number

How to check:

Look at the ticket numbers near the barcodes.

You may see something like: 000 (099) or 099 (000)

  • The number without parentheses = correct number

  • The number in parentheses = opposite number (ignore this)

Key Tip:

  • If you're looking at ticket 0, the number in parentheses will be the highest number in the pack.
    • (Note: New York and Texas packs do not begin at ticket zero (0), they begin at ticket one (1).)
  • This does NOT mean the roll should be loaded that way.
